A $4.4 million grant from the U.S. Department of Transportation will be used to advance smart transportation technology along a stretch of Interstate 70 running between Columbus, Ohio and Indianapolis.

Indiana saw a reduction in daily traffic volume of as much as 57 percent during the Stay-At-Home period.

The Indiana Department of Transportation will close a portion of Interstate 70 eastbound and westbound on Indianapolis' west side for approximately 30 days each.

Indiana first awarded the local road funding grants in 2016. Larger counties, cities and towns must match 50 percent of the money the state sends, while smaller communities only have to come up with 25 percent.

The proposed highway would begin at State Road 66 at Rockport and continue generally through the Huntingburg and Jasper areas before extending north to link up with I-69.
