Q&A

What do you consider the two most important issues facing Hoosiers who will see your name on their ballot this November? And if elected, what policies will you push for to address each one?

As I serve Johnson and Marion Counties in the State Senate, the two most common issues I hear about from constituents include inflation, and property taxes. Due to irresponsible policies at the federal level, inflation is out of control, and we are all seeing the effects from grocery stores, to gas and rent.*

In Indiana, we are fortunate to have a low-tax environment, but it’s crucial for us to do everything we can to alleviate the burden families are facing. Our efforts must certainly include property tax reform that ensures families aren’t priced out of their homes due to no fault of their own. Families are forced to live within a budget, and the government should too – while allowing Hoosiers to keep more of what they earn.

*Editor's note: For context, while many shoppers see inflation in gas and grocery prices, after climbing sharply in 2022 and 2023, grocery prices rose less than 1% in the last twelve months and were unchanged between July and August. Here is more reporting on that from NPR.

We've heard from many in our audience that they feel frustrated — sometimes disenfranchised — by our current political landscape. These feelings sometimes contribute to people deciding not to vote, and Indiana consistently ranks near the bottom of the list on voter turnout. What would you say to a potential voter who feels this way?

I would encourage every Hoosier to get involved in the political process, regardless of where they live or what they believe, and to VOTE. Our state is best served with a variety of voices and opinions, and as I seek to serve to the best of my ability, the feedback I receive is immensely helpful. We may not always agree, and that’s okay, but I encourage constituents to reach out to me. By voicing your concerns and letting me know your positions, and helping candidates you believe in, you can have an impact.

Economic anxiety is top of mind for many in our audience and around the country, with a common concern being inflation and the high price of basic needs. In all the complexity around economic issues, what specific changes need to happen to help Hoosiers and their families?

First and foremost, our government must live within its means. We must look for ways to cut wasteful spending while ensuring our priorities like public safety, education and infrastructure remain funded, and we must do so without raising taxes. I trust Hoosiers to spend their money wisely, and will seek to find ways to provide relief.
