Q&A
What do you consider the two most important issues facing Hoosiers who will see your name on their ballot this November? And if elected, what policies will you push for to address each one?
Reproductive Freedom; Public Education
78% of Hoosiers support a direct vote on Indiana's abortion law. I will be a champion for citizen-driven ballot initiatives so residents' voices can prevail.
I will fight to ensure that every public school is fully-resourced. I will also fight for access to universal pre-K and eliminating wasteful Big-Government voucher expansion handouts to private schools that discriminate in employment and deny access to LGBTQ and special-needs students.
We've heard from many in our audience that they feel frustrated — sometimes disenfranchised — by our current political landscape. These feelings sometimes contribute to people deciding not to vote, and Indiana consistently ranks near the bottom of the list on voter turnout. What would you say to a potential voter who feels this way?
Hoosiers feel left out of the political process, when they see their representatives making law that adversely impacts their families, and they don't see candidates on the ballot willing to fight for them over corporate lobbies' interests. I promise to be responsive to constituents' needs first.
Economic anxiety is top of mind for many in our audience and around the country, with a common concern being inflation and the high price of basic needs. In all the complexity around economic issues, what specific changes need to happen to help Hoosiers and their families?
We can start delivering relief for Hoosiers on limited and fixed income through state tax-reform.
The Indiana General Assembly should adopt a new tax code that, like the majority of states in our nation, levies graduated-rate income taxes. I propose dropping Indiana's tax-rate to 2% (from the current 3.15%) on the first $50k of taxable income, and creating a new top bracket of 5% on income exceeding $200k. I am also an advocate for eliminating sales tax on menstrual products.
Finally, we should adopt a tax plan that seeks to keep seniors on fixed-incomes in their homes by capping property tax increases, and by increasing personal exemptions and homeowners' and renters' deductions.
