The Indianapolis City-Council Council passed two proposals Monday night to protect the rights of renters in the city. The move comes after a state bill was amended to restrict local governments from creating such measures.

The Indianapolis City-County Council introduced a special resolution that encourages Indianapolis Power and Light company, IPL, to go further on a recent plan to stop burning coal.

A new crop of councilors joined the full Indianapolis City-County Council for the year's first meeting Monday night. Democrats now enjoy a democratic super majority for the first time in decades.

The Indianapolis City-County Council did not hear a proposal to give council members raises Monday night. The measure was pulled from the agenda right before the meeting.

The proposal has caused some controversy. It was introduced less than four hours before Monday's council meeting and with less than two months left in current councilors' terms. Mayor Joe Hogsett says he will veto the proposal.

The council introduced a proposal hours before the meeting that would double council members' pay, currently at just more than $11,000 per year.

Incumbent Democrat Joe Hogsett collected more than 71 percent of the vote to win a second term as Mayor of Indianapolis. Democrats also picked up six seats on the Indianapolis City-County-Council, adding to their majority.

The council passed the $1.2 billion budget 22-2. It includes increased funding for the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department and Indianapolis Fire Department and $500,000 for food insecurity initiatives.

The training facility will include a three-story live burn structure and a fire training tower. IFD currently rents space at the Emergency Services Education Center.
