Gov. Mike Braun signed two executive orders Thursday to reduce fraud and add new requirements for Hoosiers on unemployment.

The state’s unemployment rate last December was recorded at 4.5 percent, according to preliminary estimates from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. Some of these preliminary estimates are seasonally adjusted months — or sometimes years — after initial release.

Hoosiers on unemployment insurance could see the maximum length of benefits cut nearly in half under a new proposal heard in a Senate committee.

Indiana’s unemployment rate has increased more than 1 percent over the last five months. There was also an increase in the number of unemployment insurance claims filed for the third month in a row.

Indiana’s unemployment rate worsened slightly in July — a trend that has continued over the last four months. New preliminary data shows a significant increase in the unemployment rate from this time last year.

Indiana’s unemployment worsened in June for the third consecutive month, rising to 3.8 percent.

Indiana’s unemployment rate has gradually increased to 3.7 percent over the last six months, according to preliminary data.

Currently, Helping Veterans and Families of Indiana provides services in central Indiana to at-risk veterans. These services include temporary housing, food and employment resources.

This month’s preliminary data shows another increase up to 3.7 percent — the state’s highest unemployment rate since August 2021.
