The U.S. Department of Transportation is set to send Indiana $40 million to add additional lanes to parts of both northbound and southbound Interstate 65.

Republican U.S. Sen. Todd Young says Indiana will receive two federal grants totaling $40 million to increase the capacity of sections of Interstate 65 in south central and north central Indiana.

The money comes from Indiana's Community Crossroads Grant Program, which is part of the state's Next Level Roads program.

Two Republican primary candidates were attacked for their votes last year to raise the state's gas tax. They both won their races.

The group would include citizens, city councilors, and members of the State Senate and House of Representatives.

Transportation committee leaders in the Indiana General Assembly say their work isn't done after last session's landmark road funding bill.

Sen. Michael Crider (R-Greenfield) - one of the road funding bill's sponsors - says he's heard positive feedback since the measure passed.

A law passed this year by the General Assembly required INDOT to investigate tolling with the intention of creating $5 billion in funding for roads and bridges.

But communities have a lot of road repairs, and the new money won't cover all of them. So local leaders now have to make choices.

Veterans groups call the spending bill signed into law Thursday the "most veteran-friendly budget" in state history.
