A change from pre-pandemic, the assessment of homelessness in Indianapolis will once again be taken over a period of days but still represent a single night in January.

There were 1,928 individuals counted in the 2021 Point-in-Time Count, a 21 percent increase over 2020.

A ceremony remembered 58 people who experienced homelessness and died in Indianapolis this year.

The Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention, CHIP, gave the candidates five questions -- including how they would address racial disparity in the barriers to housing.

The award will allow the city to target already existing efforts and resources including supporting a variety of housing options.

Mental illness, chronic health conditions, substance abuse, a history of incarceration, and domestic violence were the key issues identified by those surveyed.

The one-night count, conducted in November last year, found 183 youth and young adults experiencing homelessness in the city.

The money will go to providers that work to keep people in permanent supportive housing, not transitional housing or emergency shelters.

Some who support the ordinance say downtown panhandlers are creating safety concerns and hurting business.
