A 50-member commission created by State Superintendent Glenda Ritz met for the first time Friday to begin developing strategies to address Indiana's teacher shortage.

As schools reopen across the U.S., some regions are having trouble finding enough teachers to fill vacancies. But others see a big disconnect between training and the needs of districts.

Leaders of the Indiana Senate and House education committees are asking for a summer study committee to investigate the cause of reported teacher shortages and to devise a plan for how the next General Assembly can address the issue.
