The seven-member IPS board of commissioners is set to vote at a 10 a.m. public meeting Saturday at the Madam Walker Legacy Center on whether to place a $413.6 million operating tax referendum on the May 2 primary ballot. The money goes mostly to boost pay for district teachers.

It’s uncertain when the district will discuss the property-tax referendum again and if the district will agree to share funds with charter schools.

Some say they wont support a district tax levy unless it is equitably shared among Indianapolis charter schools.

A coalition of charter school leaders are calling on Indianapolis Public Schools to share revenue from a property-tax levy the district proposed for the 2023 ballot.

The Indianapolis Public Schools board unanimously approved a plan to overhaul the district by closing six school buildings, changing grade configurations and establishing eight middle schools. The plan will also provide, for the first time, all students in middle school with algebra and arts courses.

The vote on the dramatic plan by the Indianapolis Public Schools Board is set for 6 p.m. Thursday, Nov. 17.

WFYI’s Elizabeth Gabriel interviewed Daria Parham, the Principal of Paul I. Miller School 114, about her experience and her plans to support students at Frederick Douglass SUPER School 19 if the buildings merge under the district’s Rebuilding Stronger plan.
