The annual survey of people experiencing homelessness in Indianapolis kicked off Wednesday night.

The Point-in-Time Count, conducted by the Coalition for Homelessness Intervention and Prevention, assesses how many people are without a home on a single night in January.

A total of 1,761 people were found to be without a home on Jan. 24, 2022. In 2021 it was 1,928.

A change from pre-pandemic, the assessment of homelessness in Indianapolis will once again be taken over a period of days but still represent a single night in January.

There were 1,928 individuals counted in the 2021 Point-in-Time Count, a 21 percent increase over 2020.

The one-night count, conducted in November last year, found 183 youth and young adults experiencing homelessness in the city.

It's called a point-in-time count, a one-time survey of the homeless population meant to inform the city on how many people might require services on any given day.
