Indianapolis city officials expect around 20,000 visitors downtown during the NCAA March Madness Tournament.

No official analysis has been done on the economic impact of Indiana hosting this years March Madness games, but officials say they anticipate it to be in the hundreds of millions of dollars.

Most games will be held in Indianapolis, some early games will be played in Bloomington and West Lafayette.

In a statement, the NCAA said it is in preliminary talks with state and local officials to potentially host the entire 68-team tournament around the Indianapolis metropolitan area during March and April. Indianapolis was already slated to host the Mens Final Four in April.

Tom Jernstedt worked his first Final Four in 1973 and helped push the growth of the NCAA Tournament from 25 teams to the 68, anything-can-happen bonanza held every spring.

The NCAA will furlough its entire Indianapolis-based staff of about 600 employees for three to eight weeks in a cost-saving move, according to memo obtained Wednesday by The Associated Press.
