Many East Chicago residents are concerned demolition will spread contaminated dust.

The money must be used within a year - though HUD hasn't officially approved the city's controversial demolition plan for the West Calumet Housing Complex.

The U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development held a hearing Monday about a plan to demolish the lead-contaminated West Calumet Housing Complex.

The newly announced $18 million for over 100 Indiana programs is $2 million more than the state received last year, and a small part of the almost $2 billion sent out nationwide.

The new policy requires public housing properties to go smoke-free. Thirty properties in Indiana will be affected.

A complaint has been settled by the Department of Housing and Urban Development to give current and former East Chicago residents more time, money to relocate.
