The first food truck in the Midwest run by young adults with different intellectual and developmental disabilities hits the roads in Indianapolis this week.

The bill would provide grants or loans to projects like food markets, farms or distribution initiatives to address healthy food access in underserved communities.

The USDA says Lake County has 24 food deserts and 14 of them are in Gary.

The market, coming to the Devington neighborhood on the northeast side, is run by the Indiana Black Farmer's Co-op.

A company that processes SNAP transactions at farmers markets across the U.S. will shut down at the end of the month.

The money will fund Cleo's Bodega - a micro-grocery store that sells fresh meats, vegetables and packaged foods.

Sharrona Moore has spearheaded the creation of an operation providing healthy fruits and vegetables to her neighbors in need.

Good Food Connections for the Far Eastside - with representatives from community gardens, apartment complexes, churches and others - is working to find ways of filling the fresh food void.

The town halls will start June 17 in Indianapolis and wrap up Aug. 19 in Gary, with intermediate stops in Terre Haute, Evansville, South Bend, Fort Wayne and Lafayette.
