Indianapolis will receive $15 million in federal grants to increase public access to electric vehicle charging stations throughout the community.

Indianapolis is among the worst in the country for energy efficiency, according to the report by the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy. Transportation is a main factor contributing to Indianapolis’s low score as it makes up about third of the city’s total carbon emissions.

Researchers at Purdue University have teamed up with the Indiana Department of Transportation to create a highway that could charge electric vehicles as they pass over it - removing any need to stop.

Subaru of Indiana is the company’s only auto manufacturing site outside of Japan and produces about half of all Subarus sold in the U.S.

As more people go electric, funding for roads is expected to go down. Pressel said a state task force is looking into a better way to pay for Indianas roads.

The answer has to do with the way Indiana funds its roads mainly through gasoline taxes. Some states are exploring new ways to pay for roads.
