UPDATE: As of 11:00 p.m. Sunday, July 2, AES Indiana reports 11,297 Indianapolis residents are without power. You can find live outage updates here.
Indianapolis will remain under a severe weather risk coupled with an extreme heat index through Saturday night as thousands remain without power, the National Weather Service said. Officials are urging customers and residents to have emergency safety plans in place. Approximately 81,000 customers were affected by storms that produced high winds and lightning and more than 47,000 customers were without power on June 30.
Severe weather Thursday night caused “significant damage” to power lines and equipment, an AES Spokesperson said.
With more storms headed to Central Indiana, and the severity of damage caused by fallen trees, customers could experience extended outages. AES urges customers to have an emergency safety plan in place. Out of state crews are helping with restoratione efforts, spokesperon for AES Kelly Young said.
“We’re in full storm restoration mode,” Kelly said.
Due to high temperatures, NWS recommends taking extra precautions when working or spending time outside, know the signs and symptoms of heat stroke or exhaustion and take frequent breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments when possible. More information on signs and symptoms of heat stroke can be found here.
