After 3:00 p.m. Friday, Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responded to a report of a person shot at the 1300 block of Riley Place in Indianapolis. Two men were found shot, one was taken to the hospital in critical condition and the other was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses at the scene gave a description of the alleged shooter and directed police toward the intersection of Prospect St. and S Emerson Ave. According to a department release, as officers pursued “multiple community members pointed in the direction of the intersection.”
At the intersection, an officer saw an adult man matching the description of the alleged shooter. IMPD reports the officer said, “Show me your hands! Get your hands out of your pocket!”
The department report said body-worn cameras were activated during the incident and that the footage shows the suspect pointing a gun toward the officer and the officer shooting after that. IMPD reports it located a firearm next to the suspect. No one else was injured in the incident.
The suspect was transferred to a hospital in stable condition. Detectives believe he shot the two individuals in the 1300 block of Riley Place and that there is no ongoing threat.
The officer who fired their gun has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure during an officer-involved shooting investigation.
This is the second officer-involved shooting in 2025.
Last year the department recorded 17 police shooting incidents. IMPD is currently involved in a Department of Justice review of police-involved shootings after a spike in 2023.
