The Programming Specialist will be responsible for assisting with all aspects of WFYI programming operations, from scheduling and compiling a variety of programming information to producing broadcast reports and managing logs in support of WFYI’s multicast channels. This position will prepare daily broadcast logs (television and radio) and assist the Directors of Programming with data entry for television schedules and digital platforms, plan and coordinate on-air breaks, assist with creating WFYI’s programming schedules, and ensure daily broadcasting services are accurate and compliant with industry standards.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES

 Essential functions:

  • Manage daily logs for WFYI’s broadcast channels (television and radio) by ensuring proper scheduling of programs, underwriting, and designing breaks between all primary programming in conjunction with the WFYI promotional strategy
  •  Distribute schedules to Joint Master Control (JMC) and ensure all required media is acquired in a timely manner for broadcast, coordinating file delivery with JMC
  • Maintain program flight information for on-air promos, ensuring correct on-air placement
  • Work closely with the Underwriting department to coordinate the airing of underwriting credits in accordance with specifications, connect underwriting spots with appropriate contracts, enter radio copy, ensure underwriting credits are properly honored, review reports and make changes when necessary
  •  Manage accurate broadcast schedules and information by entering program timing, lengths, ratings and descriptions in multiple databases; prepare daily program logs for WFYI multicast channels
  • Monitor PBS sources of information and other internal and external sources for updated programming and promotional info; make broadcast log changes as necessary
  • Work with On-Air Fundraising team and JMC to coordinate pledge break timings for pledge events and live events during TV and radio pledge drives
  • Evaluate, maintain, and manage interstitial inventory including local and national promotions, membership messaging and fillers
  • Maintain quarterly topics reports for the Federal Communication Commission
  • Provide back-up coverage for the Director, Programming as needed
  • Schedule flexibility (some evening and weekend work, as needed)
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

To perform this job successfully, an individual must have the following education and/or experience unless otherwise noted below.

Required:

  • Bachelor's level degree or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Excellent organizational skills with strong attention to detail
  • Capable of working independently under established and self-prioritized deadlinesMust be computer proficient, extensive experience with Word, Excel, databases, and spreadsheets
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines under time constraints.

Preferred:

  • Knowledge of broadcast operations
  •  Understanding of PBS and NPR programming operation methods
  •  Experience working with ProTrack and Marketron
