UPDATE: 4:52 p.m.

Indianapolis police are investigating a shooting involving a female victim found near the City-County Building Wednesday afternoon. Police say the shooting did not occur downtown.

The victim was found about 1:30 p.m. after a man driving a bullet-riddled Dodge Ram pickup truck traveling east on Market Street flagged down an IMPD officer traveling the opposite direction.

Inside the truck’s passenger seat, police found an unidentified female victim who’d been shot. Emergency Medical Services transported the victim to Eskenazi Hospital where she remains on life support and is listed in critical condition.

Police found a handgun on the truck’s driver, who was taken into custody for further questioning. IMPD Lieutenant Richard Riddle says the man’s relationship to the victim is unclear at this point.

“We don’t know if he’s a suspect, if he’s a victim, if he’s just a person involved," Riddle said. "Obviously our investigators are trying to figure out, through him, what occurred.”

Riddle says it’s unclear where the shooting occurred but says investigators are confident it didn’t occur downtown. The victim’s identity has not been released.

An original version of this story listed the victim as deceased per IMPD sources. IMPD has since informed WFYI that initial reports were incorrect.
