Members and allies of the LGBTQ community are promoting Pride Month with the “Wave Your Flag With Pride” campaign.

Volunteers are working to distribute Pride flags for the visibility of LGBTQ Hoosiers ahead of Indy Pride’s “Virtual Indy Pride Celebration.”

Annette Siegel Gross is a contributor to the campaign and member of PFLAG, the largest support organization for parents, family, friends and allies of LGBTQ people in the country. She says Hoosiers have loved the opportunity to share their support for Pride Month.

“The outpouring has been amazing,” says Siegel Gross. “People have been contacting us from all over the state.”

According to Drew Anderson, a board member of Stonewall Democrats and the public relations coordinator for the campaign, they ordered around 400 flags and have almost run out.

“We heard that Indy Pride was going to go virtual, so we wanted to really try to rev people up a good week before virtual Pride even starts,” says Anderson.

On Tuesday, alongside state Sen. JD Ford (D-Indianapolis) and LGBTQ activist Shelly Fitzgerald, the team hosted a delivery station in Fishers and gave out around 70 flags.

The team has also been delivering flags to individuals who message on the “Wave Your Flag With Pride” Facebook event page.

Siegel Gross says she’s been able to make home-deliveries around Indianapolis while still social distancing.

“I drop a flag off, ring the bell and run away,” says Siegel Gross with a chuckle.

Campaign members say they’ve seen people from across the state show their support for the LGBTQ community.

“What I’ve noticed over the years is that more and more straight people, whether they have LGBTQ family members or not, are stepping up to the plate,” says Siegel Gross.

Anderson says the campaign combines our Hoosier values and the LGBTQ mission, “What we’re looking to get out of this is to really get back to the grassroots and to really hold on to our values which are being visible and calling for acceptance while we love everyone.”

The campaign team hopes to keep their momentum going with flag pick-up locations in Evansville and Fort Wayne in the coming week.
