Summer employment program for young people implements new tools

Indianapolis kicks off the summer hiring season with a new tool for job seekers in an effort to connect more young people with employment.

Employ Indy heads the Project Indy program along with the city and other partners, to make jobs more accessible for young people.  A new online platform uses text messaging to connect potential employees. The expanded tool also filters jobs by location and interest, and makes it easier for people to apply.

Project Indy targets youth ages 16-24, and currently has more than 1,200 openings through 63 local employers.  There are jobs open through the parks, museums, hospitality or service industry.

In a written statement Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said employment partners provide more than a paycheck.

“They allow young people to explore opportunities along a productive path, at a time when negative influences can be harmful to individuals and the community at large,” Hogsett said.

The summer jobs initiative started in 2016 and has helped connect nearly 13,000 young people with jobs.  Summer jobs help build soft skills, work experience and keep youth engaged in positive activities.

The 2022 edition of the Project Indy summer jobs initiative is at projectindy.net. Youth can get started by texting “project Indy” to 317-659-9657.
