Putnam County is looking for an artist to commission a mural on four grain silos on the southside of Greencastle.

The artist, who must be 18 or older, will receive a $22,500 stipend and will host workshops for the community about the importance of murals in neighborhoods.

The Putnam County Mural Project listens to feedback from the community about what the county means to them and what they would like the mural to look like to collaborate with the chosen artist.

Chris Flegal is the leader of the volunteer group promoting the project.

“I think art has the ability to bring a lot of pride to community,” Flegal says. “I think it allows people to think about their heritage and think about why they live where they live.”

The mural will be at the northwest corner of Veterans Memorial Highway and U.S. 231 in Greencastle. Flegal says this is a high traffic area and will be the site of a bike and walk path in the future. Artist applications are due June 28.

Once an artist is selected, the Putnam County community will be invited to vote between two artist renderings in early August. Prepping the silos will also happen in August. Mural installation will be complete by the end of September.
