A man is dead after an officer-involved shooting early Tuesday morning on the near east side of Indianapolis.

Around 2:00 a.m. Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers were dispatched to a business on East Washington Street for a reported assault.

While investigating the assault, an officer attempted to speak with an adult male leaving the area who was believed to have an active warrant for his arrest.

The encounter led to a short foot pursuit where the officer deployed his taser and then shot the man, according to IMPD.

The man was taken to the hospital where he was later pronounced dead.

The officer who fired their gun, has been placed on administrative leave, which is standard procedure during an officer-involved shooting investigation.

This is the first officer-involved shooting in 2025.

Last year the department recorded 17 police shooting incidents. IMPD is currently involved in a Department of Justice review of police-involved shootings after a spike in 2023.
