A child died Sunday from what Indianapolis police say was an accidental self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police received a report of a person shot around 1 p.m. Sunday in the 10000 block of John Jay Drive in the Amber Woods Apartments, on the far east side.

Officers arrived and found a child with injuries consistent with a gunshot wound, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department news release. Emergency personnel transported the child to Riley Hospital in critical condition, and the child was pronounced deceased shortly after.

Police say a firearm was found inside the residence, and preliminary information suggests the incident was accidental. The Marion County Coroner’s Office will release more information about the child once family has been notified.
