Purple Line construction on Monday will begin a new 130-day closure along 38th Street between Emerson and Shadeland avenues for roadway and drainage improvements.

“This will take place between Emerson and Shadeland avenues. And what this closure will look like is it will be a total closure westbound on 38th Street between Emerson and Shadeland," IndyGo spokesperson Carrie Black said. "So, people driving westbound will have to detour along Shadeland up to 46th Street, and then down Emerson and then back on 38th Street to navigate around that closure. For those traveling eastbound, there will be one lane of traffic that will remain open.”

Black said the department held several community meetings earlier this year, both in person, and virtually, to share how the construction would impact the local area.

“We just want to take that opportunity ahead of each of these major closures to make sure people understand what's happening, when it's happening, why it's happening," Black said. "And again, it's always just a good opportunity to reiterate all of the wonderful benefits that the purple line is going to bring to the east 38th street and Post Road corridors.”

The Purple Line is scheduled to open for service in late 2024.  The line will run 15 miles, connecting downtown Indianapolis to Lawrence.

Riders can plan their trips using Google Maps, the Transit app or IndyGo's online trip planner tool here.
