The Indianapolis Metropolitan Development Commission on Wednesday gave final approval for a new, potential Major League Soccer stadium.
The proposal to build on a downtown site near the heliport was pushed through the City-County Council, two months after Mayor Joe Hogsett announced plans to pursue an MLS team.
“We look forward to having conversations with members of the State Budget Committee later this summer as we continue the effort to secure a Major League Soccer expansion club for Indianapolis,” Hogsett said, "and solidify our status as the greatest sports host city in the world."
This is the second Professional Sports Development Area created for a soccer team in Indianapolis. The first was planned for Indy Eleven, at a riverfront site that's become the center of controversy involving a historic cemetery.
This move from the City-County Council effectively ends any city financial support for the Eleven Park project.
The city has not yet secured an MLS team, and funding supporters have not been announced. And the city still has to submit its plans to the state for approval.
