Funeral services were held Monday in Indianapolis for a Marion County Sheriff's deputy killed by a detainee last week.

John Durm was remembered as a loving husband and father and dedicated public safety servant.  He was strangled by 34-year-old Orlando Mitchell at the Adult Detention Center on the Community Justice Campus last week.

Marion County Sheriff Kerry Forestal spoke at the service and said his death should inspire action.

“Let us channel our grief into a renewed determination to create safer neighborhoods and to continue to build bridges between communities and law enforcement,” Forestal said.

The service was held at Gainbridge Fieldhouse. Durm was a long-time Pacers fan. Honors included a public procession and speeches from local leaders.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said Durm’s death was not in vain.

“We can preserve his memory, honor his sacrifice and commitment and continue his commitment to serve others,” Hogsett said.

Durm was 61 years old, and a 38-year veteran with the Marion County Sheriff’s Office. Members of his family also work for law enforcement, including his wife and son.

The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office announced they will seek the death penalty in the case against Mitchell.
