Heavy construction is underway on I-465, much of which will take place this summer

All I-465 eastbound lanes between I-65 and I-70 will be closed to traffic from June 2 to the 21. All westbound lanes will be closed July 7 to the 29.

Indiana Department of Transportation Communications Director Natalie Garrett said the project will add lane capacity to I-465.

“We'll have hundreds of crews out 24 hours a day, seven days a week completing this work so we can get done what we needed to get done and get out,” she said.

Garrett told WFIU that an official detour route will follow I-65 and I-70 through the south split. She recommended commuters consider their routes beforehand.

“There could be some increased congestion and some delays, so plan ahead,” Garrett said.

Construction on the interchange will last through 2024 although according to INDOT some travel restrictions may last into the next year.

Work will also continue on I-69 and I-465 on the northeast side of Indianapolis for the Clear Path project. It includes new lanes and 14 new bridges to improve traffic flow. Construction began early last year and will end by 2026.
