Indiana University Will Boost Minimum Wage To $8.25 July 1

Indiana University is boosting its minimum wage to $8.25 per hour, effective July 1. 

The increase will put IU above the federal minimum wage of $7.25 per hour, which is also the university’s current pay floor. 

The move will cost the university about $1 million and will affect about 8,750 employees. Two thirds of those workers are on the Bloomington campus, largely in the housing and dining services.

At an IU Trustees meeting earlier this year, IU Trustee Patrick Shoulders suggested the university needed to raise its minimum wage to $10.10 cents per hour, in line with President Obama’s proposal.

Shoulders says he’s pleased the university is taking what he sees as a “first step” to increasing the quality of life for its employees.

“I think that anybody that preforms work be it part time or full time here should get a wage that begins to reflect what it costs to live.”

IU last increased its minimum wage in 2009 to bring it in line with an increase in the federal minimum wage.
