The city of Noblesville recently hosted its annual White River Clean Up program. This is the 27th year the city has led a conservation project of the waterway.
The White River Alliance, in cooperation with White River Canoe Company, offered canoes and kayaks to volunteers.
Haley Cowart, education and outreach coordinator for White River Alliance, said the river clean up events help spread awareness about the importance of taking care of the water.
“It’s really sad to think that we have to do them year after year, but I think spreading awareness and education and to also get people out there to see it. I think sometimes when you are removed from it it’s hard to care,” Cowart said.
Six "free paddle days” were offered this summer, in conjunction with two river clean-ups. Over 200 people participated.
Residents can also help protect the White River by volunteering for river sampling or by taking a Volunteer Service Pledge through Indiana.clearchoicescleanwater.org.
