The Greencastle airport hopes to reignite local aviators’ interest in flying – and their interest in the municipal airstrip – by taking part in a national program Saturday.

The Rusty Pilots Program, sponsored by the Aircraft Owners and Pilots Association (AOPA), is aimed at pilots who have fallen out of practice and want to reenter the industry.

Putnam County Airport Authority President Perry Wainman says he’s hoping to cultivate more regular travelers to the Greencastle airport.

“We’re going to see how it is,” he says. “Right now, I think we’ve got a lot of interest and it may take a few of them to really get things off the ground. And the weather changing will help, too.”

When the weather does change, Wainman says Greencastle plans to host Saturday morning breakfast fly-ins for local pilots, as it has in the past.

“We’ve got more interest, more people wanting to fly,” Wainman says. “We’ve just got to get our programs in a row and get things back started again.”

The Greencastle airport is the only Indiana location that will host a Rusty Pilots Program until at least the end of March.

Rusty Pilots is a three-hour program that includes ground instruction. More information is at aopa.org.
