New safety technology is flashing outside nearly two dozen schools in Indianapolis.

The beacons are being installed at schools all around Marion County. The city’s Department of Public Works is adding the technology at locations that lack flashing lights or adequate pedestrian crossings.  The flashing beacons alert drivers they are in a school zone.

In a statement, DPW Director Brandon Herget said the lights mean drivers should slow down.

“When you pass an active school zone beacon, slow down and pay extra attention to ensure our kids – the most vulnerable pedestrians in our city - get to and from school safely,” the statement said.

Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett announced the safety improvements this summer. It was part of a larger infrastructure plan announcement that included safety improvements for pedestrians, bikers and students.

At that time, the city said it would also support legislation that would permit the use of video cameras to enforce speeding around schools.
