The November race for Marion County sheriff will be among longtime law enforcement officers Democrat Kerry Forestal and Republican Brian Durham.

Forestal and Durham won their party's primary runoff Tuesday. Sheriff John Layton will step down at the end of this year, after reaching the limit of two terms in office.

The upcoming election will likely see issues debated around the office's budget, pay disparity between deputies and Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers, and how to manage inmates in the county jail.

The sheriff's office includes about 450 deputies and another 400 civilian personnel with an annual budget of $100 million. Responsibilities include running the county jail, transporting people under arrest to jail, 911 dispatchers and keeping tabs on more than 6,000 offenders on the sex offender registry.

Forestal, 62, is a lieutenant colonel with the sheriff's office. He beat Bill Benjamin, 60, a former deputy chief of investigations for Indianapolis police.

Durham, 48, has worked at the Marion County Sheriff’s Office and is now with IMPD. He's been a law enforcement officer for 27 years. He beat Jim Grimes, 58, a Marion County deputy, and Tom Vaughn, 49, the Southport Police Chief.
