Layton: Politics, Budget Challenges Await Next Marion County Sheriff

Tuesday is the primary election for five Marion County Sheriff candidates.  Sheriff John Layton will step down at the end of this year, after reaching the limit of two terms in office. In a wide-ranging interview, WFYI’s Eric Weddle talked with Layton about the office itself, the challenges and the politics ahead for his successor.

“There's so much more that I feel that I could have gotten done if it wasn't for those kind of politics,” says Layton, a Democrat, of in-fighting among local politicians. “And it's a shame when it comes to the safety and security of your family and your kids and your friends.”

The two Democrats running for Marion County sheriff are Bill Benjamin and Kerry Forestal. The three Republicans are Brian K. Durham, Jim Grimes and Tom Vaughn.
