Work on one of the largest projects of the Circle City Forward initiative is underway. The new solid waste garage is the latest major facility project to get underway as part of the initiative.
When the Circle City Forward effort was launched last year, the 70 year-old building was targeted. The aging facility is no longer sufficient for current employees and Department of Public Works vehicles.
The new $10.5 million building will house DPW trucks, equipment and new offices.
“Once completed, the new garage will represent the first major update for solid waste facilities in well over half a century,” Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett said in a statement. “It will have the capacity to better house and preserve the entire fleet of vehicles while better reflecting the importance of the people who work there and the job they do for us.”
The garage will be built on the same site on the city’s southwest side. The location is close to the southside landfill and the Covanta Indianapolis Resource Recovery Facility.
The Circle City Forward initiative has committed more than $300 million to public projects including facilities, greenways and residential roadways.
