A portion of a busy thoroughfare is reopening ahead of the holiday season. Work on Broad Ripple Avenue between Winthrop and Guilford avenues has finished a few weeks early.
The stretch of road was closed in September, impacting business along the popular bar and restaurant route.
The Department of Public Works said the main focus of the work is long-need sewer and drainage improvements. The stormwater superstructure installs a 48-inch pipe under Broad Ripple Avenue to connect with infrastructure and alleviate flooding. Phases I and II of the project also include road reconstruction and sidewalk widening.
“First and foremost, we are thankful to our city officials for recognizing the need for stormwater improvements in our area and for the positive reception towards the cosmetic improvements to beautify the space and increase pedestrian safety,” Jordan Dillon, executive director of Broad Ripple Village Association said in a statement.
Work on the $8.5 million project will resume in the spring. Phase II will close the western section of Broad Ripple Avenue between Winthrop and College avenues. People will still be able to access businesses.
The work also includes a multi-use path connecting to Broad Ripple Park.
The effort is part of a busy year for DPW with more than $240 million in infrastructure improvements.
