WFYI to launch new speaker series with Cokie Roberts

Cokie Roberts, senior news analyst for National Public Radio (NPR), will be in Indianapolis speaking at a public forum on Thursday, July 23, at 6 p.m., at the Indiana Repertory Theatre. Roberts, who is in town to help WFYI Public Media launch a new speaker series called Listen Up, will discuss national politics, current events and her experiences as a broadcast journalist over the past 40 years. General admission tickets are $25 each.


Tickets are also available for a reception with Robert, also at IRT, prior to the conversation for $100. All proceeds from the evening go to support public media programming in central Indiana. Learn more.


Roberts began her radio career as a foreign correspondent for CBS in the 1970s, and started covering Capitol Hill for NPR in 1978, reporting on the Panama Canal Treaty. Beginning in the early 1980s, she was assigned to Capitol Hill fulltime serving as the network’s congressional correspondent for more than a decade. Currently, she serves as a regular contributor to NPR’s Morning Edition, as well as a political commentator for ABC News.


Also a best-selling author, Roberts has written a number of books, including “We Are Our Mothers’ Daughters” (1998), “Founding Mothers: The Women Who Raised Our Nation” (2004), “Ladies of Liberty: The Women Who Shaped Our Nation” (2008), and others. Her most recent book, “Capital Dames: The Civil War and the Women of Washington,” was published earlier this year.


Throughout her career, Roberts has earned countless awards, including three Emmys. In addition to her being inducted into the Broadcasting and Cable Hall of Fame, Roberts was also cited by the American Women in Radio and Television as one of the 50 greatest women in the history of broadcasting. Recently, she was named a “Living Legend” by the Library of Congress.
