In this sponsor spotlight, we spoke with George M. Plews, Partner at Plews Shadley Racher and Braun.
What role does your company play in the community?
Plews Shadley Racher & Braun is a law firm with a long history of community service. It is deeply ingrained in our culture; we expect our lawyers to assist in good works, and we support them financially in doing just that. We also do direct community aid, from feeding ministries to shelters, couching youth sports, tutoring, refugee resettlement and more. We support charitable work within our profession as well, including pro bono representation, support of legal service organizations, and engagement in ministries to improve the quality of legal representation.
What role does Public Media play in your life?
A pretty large one! Besides listening and watching almost every day, I have had the privilege to serve on the Board of Trustees of the National Public Radio Foundation the past 12 years, and I just finished a term as President of the WFYI Foundation. These foundations look to secure the long-term future of public media, on both the national and the local level. When I was at Princeton, my senior thesis was a study of what might be done to assure that American public television and radio - then brand new - would have the resources to be successful, politically independent resources. Now I get to work on the evolving form of that same challenge!
What value does WFYI provide the community?
With the demise of daily newspapers locally and the rise of news "advocacy" programs nationally, a trustworthy, objective and in-depth provider of information is essential to central Indiana. But WFYI also supports and gives a voice to arts and other cultural activities. Its children's educational programming may be its most vital public service. And even WFYI's sheer physical presence in the heart of our city at 16th and Meridian literally provides a home for many great not-for-profits that do great things.
