In this Sponsor Spotlight, we spoke with Larry Smith, President/CEO of Fathers and Families Center.
What role does Fathers and Families Center play in the community?
I view WFYI as an organization that is indispensable to informing the public regarding many of the most important issues in our lives. In many ways, Fathers and Families Center has had a similar role for over 30 years; we inform the public about the importance of fatherhood in our communities and for the future of our children.
Why do you support WFYI? What role does public media play in your life?
WFYI is how I have obtained the majority of my news for the last 30 years. I don’t watch a lot of TV; instead, I tune in for my news and other favorite programs – whether I am in my car, at the office, or at home.
What value does WFYI provide the community?
I very much believe that an informed citizenry is crucial for democracy to function. It doesn’t take much to realize that disinformation and misinformation — particularly through the media- can lead to authoritarian regimes. Tragically, we see that happening in many parts of the world. The value that WFYI provides the community is its balanced, non-biased reporting so that we, as members of the community, can make our own informed decisions.
What’s your favorite way to listen to or consume WFYI?
Consume is a great word because I voraciously intake WFYI! I am an equal opportunity listener, whether via the radio or internet. It is how I begin and end my day, as well as stayed informed throughout the day.
If you could recommend just one WFYI / NPR / PBS program, what would it be?
I can’t pick just one! Morning Edition, All Things Considered and 1A are my go-to programs.
