Sponsor Highlight: Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust

What role does your company or organization play in the community?

The Nina Mason Pulliam Charitable Trust is a private foundation dedicated to helping people in need, especially women and children; protecting animals and nature; and enriching community life. The majority of our funding supports direct human services, and we are also a lead funder in animal welfare initiatives in Marion County, aimed at reducing dog and cat overpopulation. Our environmental efforts focus on protecting our community waterways, primarily the White River; and we contribute to institutions that give our city its “soul,” primarily libraries, zoos and museums.

Why do you support WFYI?

Our roots at the Trust are in journalism – our benefactress, Nina Mason Pulliam, along with her husband, Eugene C. Pulliam, co-owned Central Newspapers Inc. As Mrs. Pulliam did, we at the Trust understand the power of media in its role in educating the public, holding policymakers accountable, conducting investigative journalism and keeping critical community and social issues top of mind – we find WFYI holds to a high standard in executing this role. What role does public media play in your life? Public media is one of the primary= information sources I consult daily, because it is thorough, unbiased and provides a breadth of local, national and international news.

If you could recommend just one WFYI / NPR / PBS program, what would it be?

It’s difficult to limit this to one show, but I’ll go with Morning Edition as it delves into important news topics that commercial news programs may give only glancing coverage, and is interspersed with local news. I feel I’m beginning my day well-informed after I’ve checked in each morning.
