American Portrait is a new, multi-platform documentary project from PBS that harnesses the power of the American people to tell their own stories. The project will try to answer the questions: what does it really mean to be an American today? What are our dreams? What are the values we share? What are the challenges we face? What are the points of commonality that unite us all?
There’s only one piece missing: you. PBS has specifically tapped WFYI to ask our audience for their stories.
To submit your story, simply visit the American Portrait website, explore prompts like, “The tradition I carry on is…” “My American story started when…” and “You don’t know what it’s like to...” Simply select a prompt, and submit your video, image or text answer.
A team of PBS documentary filmmakers will then spread out across the country to further explore the most compelling stories, resulting in a landmark television event that consists of multiple episodes, each centering around a specific theme. Your stories will help shape, guide, and inform this multi-part documentary series, plus an interactive web archive of stories and eventually, a travelling art exhibit.
Visit pbs.org/Americanportrait to read the submitted stories or to submit your own.
