Mid-sized Farmers Meat Processing Exemption

Legislation before the General Assembly would eliminate a long-standing exemption for mid-sized farmers to process the meat from animals grown on their farms. This week Host Jolene Ketzenberger talks about the issue with the father-son farmers Jeff and Zach Hawkins, the only operation in Indiana currently operating under the exemption. She also talks with Greg Gunthorp, a sustainable farmer who has operated under an exemption whose operation grew into one that required a USDA approved processing facility on site. And chef Alan Sternberg explains why it all matters to people who pay attention to what they eat.
