A long awaited expansion of the White River State Park is being realized as numerous projects along the banks of the river come together in a flurry of development.

Indianapolis will remove one low-head dam as part of ongoing efforts to make the White River safer for recreation and improve the river’s ecology.

The Henry Street bridge will connect neighborhoods and span the White River at a key site in downtown Indianapolis.

The city has spent the last year working with a community advisory group to study the riverfront site where Greenlawn Cemetery was built in the 1800’s.

Public and private efforts to transform the White River and its Indianapolis banks are ongoing through a variety of developing projects.

The $21 million project will add a mile to the trail, and connect near westside neighborhoods to the downtown core. It’s the second expansion since it was completed ten years ago.

Zionsville, Fishers, Anderson, Carmel, Indianapolis, Noblesville and Westfield, along with the Madison and Hamilton counties have partnered to apply for a READI grant to attract, develop and retain talent.

The body of a 17-year-old boy who went missing last week when a canoe he had been riding in went over a dam in Indianapolis has been recovered from the White River, authorities said.

The canoe carrying the boy, a 45-year-old man and a dog overturned at the dam near downtown Indianapolis about 7:20 p.m. Tuesday.

The Red-tail Land Conservancy announced Tuesday that it had established the 50-acre Hidden Canal Nature Preserve in Anderson.
