A federal appeals court has upheld a law unique to Indiana that prohibits voters from asking county judges to extend voting hours beyond the state's 6 p.m. closing time because of Election Day troubles.

Long, socially distanced lines were seen at Marion Countys 22 polling locations on Election Day. Numerous changes were introduced to the voting experience Tuesday because of COVID-19.

The Indiana Election Division sent guidance to county election officials on polling place safety issues.

Election Day will look a lot different in Marion County this year. There are concerns about the record number of mail-in ballots, a lack of resources and limited in person voting locations.

A group dedicated to pursuing vote-by-mail for every Hoosier in every election is suing the state to help make that a reality this fall.

Indiana election officials have started contemplating whether voters might need to cast all ballots by mail for the state's primary election because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Current poll hours are 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. Indiana is one of only three states whose polls close that early. Its also one of only 18 states where polls are open just 12 hours.

Democratic incumbent Mayor Joe Hogsett and his opponent, Republican State Sen. Jim Merritt, made their last push in the race for Indianapolis mayor Tuesday.
