The United States' new national mental health crisis line, 988, is going live on July 16. The new 3-digit hotline is supposed to make it easy for people struggling with addiction, suicide and mental illness to get help fast. But with just weeks to go, hundreds of positions remain unfilled.

Teachers in Indiana are learning to spot the warning signs that students might be considering killing themselves and how to help pupils cope with classmates' suicides or attempted suicides.

Indiana's Fayette County once bustled with factories that served the auto industry, earning the nickname "Little Detroit." Now, it has another distinction: the highest suicide and overdose death rates in the state.

The three-step training teaches people how to ask the right questions, persuade them to get help and where to refer them to get help.

To get a license in Indiana, teachers first need to have suicide prevention training, but lawmakers are expanding those efforts.

The study focused on Indiana and Connecticut's firearm seizure laws. While Connecticut's suicide rate has been offset by different factors over 10 years, Indiana's has gradually decreased since the enactment of the seizure law.

Indiana teachers grades 5 and up must go through suicide prevention training at least once every three years, beginning July 1.
