Indiana engine maker Cummins didn't admit to wrongdoing in the alleged installation of emissions defeat devices on more than 900,000 RAM pickup truck engines over the past decade. The company said it was a defect. In a press conference on Wednesday, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Department of Justice pushed back on that statement.

The company doing the work hopes to build a logistics and distribution warehouse where the West Calumet Housing Complex once stood. Residents worry Industrial Development Advantage, LLC could spread that pollution around the neighborhood and recontaminate yards.

Tradebe Treatment and Recycling, LLC wants to store hazardous waste for longer time periods than what's usually allowed.

The agency hopes the standards will prevent thousands of deaths and tens of thousands of serious illnesses.

The EPA has proposed lowering the amount of soot from 12 micrograms per cubic meter of air to somewhere between 9 and 10. The agency said that could save about 4,200 lives every year.
