Vote On Local Homestead Tax Credit Postponed

Vote On Local Homestead Tax Credit Postponed

The City County Council’s Administration and Finance Committee is postponing a vote on a hot button issue of the 2014 budget.

Members want to take more time on deciding whether or not to eliminate the Local Homestead Tax Credit.

The Council rejected the move this summer and Democratic Councilor Angela Mansfield says combined with an increase from a potential expansion the police taxing district, her constituents will be paying more next year.

"I have concerns because in my district, getting rid of the homestead credit and then passing the police expansion is going to cause a double whammy," she said.  "At least probably $120, if not more, per home owner."

But, Indianapolis Mayor Greg Ballard is asking the council to reconsider because of the potential savings.

"We just need to simplify and make it fair," said Ballard.  "When they do that, then it creates $11 million for the city."

The Committee will take up the issue again September 10.
