Lockdown Lifted at U.S. Capitol, House In Session

Updated by WFYI at 4:30 p.m.

The lockdown of the U.S. Capitol was lifted at 3 p.m., and the House of Representatives is back in session working on veterans issues.

NPR’s “The Two-Way” news blog  reports that the incident allegedly began when a woman tried to ram a security barrier outside the White house and then led police on a high-speed chase that ended near Capitol Hill, where gunshots were fired by police.

The woman’s vehicle struck a Capitol Police cruiser. The officer driving the cruiser was injured, but the only details reported about his condition were that he appeared to be “conscious and breathing.” The condition of the suspect, and a child that may have been in the car with her during the incident, have not been reported.

Capitol Police Chief Kim Dine spoke to reporters at about 3:40 p.m. and said the scene had been secured and that there was no reason to think the incident was anything other than isolated and not connected to terrorism.

U.S. Capitol On Edge, After Reports Of Gunshots

Parts of the U.S. Capitol are on lockdown, after gun shots were reportedly heard.

NPR's David Welna reports he was escorted to a cloakroom with other reporters.

Capitol Police ordered everyone to shelter in place.

"Gunshots have been reported on Capitol Hill requiring all occupants in all House Office Buildings to shelter in place," police said in a email to staffers. "Close, lock and stay away from external doors and windows."

Buzzfeed's Capitol reporter Kate Nocera says that she was outside the building, when a police officer ordered her to into the building. She tweeted this picture:
