United Way Ready To Help Storm Victims

Indiana communities are trying to put the pieces back together after they were ravaged by storms, Sunday.

Governor Mike Pence is touring the affected areas, Monday, making stops in Kokomo, Logansport, Lafayette and Washington which were the most heavily hit parts of the state.

In Indianapolis, United Way of Central Indiana President and CEO, Ann Murtlow, says her organization is assessing the situation, but prepared to offer assistance.

"Typically we help with the volunteer coordination," said Murtlow.  "So, we are in touch with the Red Cross.  They are always the first responders."

And she says regardless of the organization, coordination is the key to effective recovery.

"If you can use volunteers correctly in a recovery effort, it's really great," she said.  "But, if you have volunteers who are not well coordinated, it can be a real problem.  It can be a hinderance to the recovery effort."

"We have a long history of coordinating with the American Red Cross.  We do that very well.  They are the first responders.  They were up there last night.  So, we are just waiting to see where they need us."
