Indiana State Police are looking for distracted drivers from a semi truck.

Spokesman Capt. Ron Galaviz said the Trooper-in-a-Truck initiative places a trooper in a commercial motor vehicle to look for violations as the truck driver travels a selected route around the state.

“Please be very cautious and cognizant around trucks. Give them the distance that they need and deserve because their vehicle is not as maneuverable as ours,” Galaviz said.

The trooper-in-a-truck will look primarily for violations of Indiana’s “hands-free” law. The law, prohibiting the use of hand-held communication devices in all but emergency situations, has been in effect for over a year. Police said distracted driving continues to be a major problem on Indiana’s roadways.

The Indiana Motor Truck Association is working in conjunction with the state police by providing the trucks and drivers.

The Commercial Motor Vehicle Enforcement Division of the Indiana State Police has conducted Trooper-in-a-Truck type patrols for the last few years, except in 2020.
