Tim Moriarty announced Tuesday he will pursue the nomination to be the next Marion County Prosecutor.
He's seeking to complete the term left by Terry Curry, who resigned Monday to focus on his treatment for prostate cancer.
Moriarty has served as special counsel to Indianapolis Mayor Joe Hogsett, and chair of the city’s Criminal Justice Reform Task Force since 2016. Prior to that, he worked as a litigator at Faegre Baker Daniels.
“The Marion County Prosecutor’s Office plays a critical role in the community’s public safety and criminal justice reform efforts,” Moriarty said in a press release announcing his candidacy. “Over the last three years, I’ve had the chance to see firsthand the importance of smart policy that keeps violent criminals off our streets and thoughtful reforms in order to keep those who don’t belong in jail, out.”
Chief Trial Deputy Ryan Mears became acting prosecutor Monday immediately following Curry’s resignation, in accordance with state law. Mears announced his candidacy on Wednesday. A caucus of Marion County Democratic Precinct Committeepersons will elect an individual to fulfill the term through Dec. 31, 2022.
Correction: An earlier version of this post said Terry Curry was being treated for colon cancer. He said Sept. 23 that he has been receiving treatment for prostate cancer since 2015.
